Independent 20th Century is pleased to announce details of its upcoming fifth edition. The invitation-only fair, founded in 2022, champions artists and avant-garde movements between 1900 and 2000, and for the first time this year will take place at Sotheby’s at The Breuer in New York City. The building, which opened in 1966 and has served as home to the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Met Breuer, and the Frick Collection, brings nearly sixty years of acclaimed cultural programming to its new chapter as Sotheby's global headquarters. Independent 20th Century runs from September 24th to 27th, 2026.

Architect Marcel Breuer’s landmark on Museum Mile was formerly home to the Whitney Museum of American Art (1966–2014), the Met Breuer (2016–20), and the Frick Collection (2021–24). Independent celebrates the history of the building with its focus on curatorial integrity and innovation and the reassessment of 20th-century art history. Matthew Higgs, Independent’s Founding Curatorial Advisor, notes that "the iconic Breuer building provides the perfect context for Independent 20th Century, a fair that seeks to both explore and amplify the complexity of the art of the 20th Century."

Independent 20th Century continues its mission to reframe the canon of 20th-century art by bringing together artists from diverse geographies, generations, movements, and styles. Under the leadership of Independent’s curatorial team, the 2026 edition features 56 nominated exhibitors, with solo, duo, and group presentations of works by more than 130 artists. Most, about 80%, will be solo or two-person presentations. Some exhibitions will be produced by two galleries working jointly. The complete list of galleries and artists is enumerated below.

These presentations of artists in the storied building provide a sense of continuity and legacy in the history of art exhibitions in New York, marking a watershed moment for the art world. Gallerist Alma Luxembourg of Luxembourg + Co., a Founding Gallery of Independent 20th Century, says that “to plan an art fair in such an important architectural site as the Breuer Building, and in a prime location in New York City, is a hugely exciting opportunity for a gallerist, and it sets Independent 20th Century apart from any other art fair in today’s landscape.”

Since opening in November, Sotheby’s new headquarters at the Breuer building has served as a destination for museum-quality exhibitions, cultural programming, and public engagement, welcoming galleries, collectors, and the public into one of the city's most storied architectural landmarks. Charles Stewart, CEO, Sotheby’s, observes that "Sixty years after its opening, the Breuer continues to serve as a beacon of modernism. In that spirit, hosting Independent 20th Century here for the first time represents both a milestone and a natural evolution. Sothebys is delighted to collaborate with Independent to push beyond the traditional boundaries of the art world in ways that engage collectors, gallerists and art lovers alike.” The partnership between Sotheby’s and Independent, and its curatorial presentations within the landmark building, will enable visitors to experience the building's spaces through an entirely new lens.

Independent 20th Century and Sotheby’s envision their strategic partnership as helping to  create new bridges between galleries, collectors, and the public, bringing together Independent's curatorial approach with Sotheby's global platform and expertise. Independent’s curatorial presentations at the Breuer establish new models for how galleries, auction houses, and estates may function jointly to offer meaningful experiences with art for the public. Elizabeth Dee, Founder and Creative Director of Independent, states that “Independent 20th Century at the Breuer demonstrates the show’s unique ability to bring an artist’s vision from the modern era to life in a historic architectural and partnership setting—resulting in a new cultural conversation that breaks with aesthetic and market norms.”
