About the Presentation
Rosenberg & Co. will present work by Gertrude Greene in a solo presentation at Independent 20th Century. Gertrude Greene was an American artist best known for her Constructivist compositions and for her role as one of the founding members of the American Abstract Artists group. In addition to her artistic practice, Greene worked tirelessly throughout the 1930s to support fellow artists and was heavily involved in leftist artist organizations. Gertrude Greene passed away in 1956 at the age of fifty-two. Her remarkable contributions to Constructivism in the United States and her tireless efforts to promote the dissemination of abstract art have often been underrecognized. After two fires in the Greene’s warehouse following Gertrude’s death, a substantial portion of her work has been lost. In addition to a selection of collages, the proposed construction and abstract painting from the 1940s, are not only striking examples of her work but some of the last remaining of their kind held by the Estate.
