About the Gallery
Rosenberg & Co., owned and run by Marianne Rosenberg, Paul Rosenberg’s granddaughter, focuses on the highest standards of connoisseurship and expertise that have been cultivated over generations by the family. Rosenberg & Co. is based in New York and continues the Rosenberg family’s distinguished tradition of exhibiting an international roster of works by prominent Impressionist, Modern, and living artists. The gallery represents contemporary artists Ann Christopher, and Aude Herlèdan, as well as the artists’ estates of Marguerite Louppe & Maurice Brianchon, and Fred Stein. Marianne Rosenberg is a committee member of the Fondazione Giacomo Manzù, and the Association des Amis de Serge Charchoune, and represents the Comité Léger within the United States.
About the Presentation
Rosenberg & Co. will present work by Esphyr Slobodkina in a solo presentation at Independent 20th Century. Esphyr Slobodkina was a Russian-born author, illustrator, and pioneer of early American abstraction. Slobodkina was a forerunner of hard-edge painting, and her work often incorporated juxtaposing planar shapes in harmonious arrangements of color and form. She became a founding member of the American Abstract Artists group in 1936, which helped pave the way for the acceptance of abstract art in the United States. Slobodkina illustrated and published the children’s book Caps for Sale in 1940, which remains a best-selling storybook. Slobodkina produced art until shortly before her death in 2002, consistently, and passionately exploring new media. The recent museum exhibition, Architects of Being: Louise Nevelson and Esphyr Slobodkina, has brought renewed institutional attention to Slobodkina’s career.
