About the Gallery
Halsey McKay Gallery was founded in 2011 with the goal to bring inspired contemporary art to East Hampton, New York. From the first exhibition, Halsey McKay Gallery has presented an eclectic and experimental range of international artists and programming. The gallery represents emerging and mid-career artists, many of whom are held in the permanent collections of significant museums worldwide. Halsey McKay regularly collaborates with curators, gallerists, and artists beyond the roster for on and off-site exhibitions and participates extensively in art fairs. Halsey McKay is owned and directed by artist Ryan Wallace.

About the presentation
Halsey McKay Gallery makes its Independent New York debut with a dual exhibition of Janis Provisor and Miranda Fengyuan Zhang. Provisor’s ethereal multimedia paintings on linen slip and slide from suggested imagery into pure abstraction. Now in her 70s, the artist credits this phase of life for helping her develop a confident economy of mark-making. She considers all the work autobiographical as she grapples with her own emotions, desires, and frustrations. Similarly vibrating at the borders of abstraction and representation, Zhang’s subjects are ephemeral but familiar: extrapolated gardens, layered mountains, volcanoes, rivers, and icebergs. She explores the formal language of painting through weaving, a methodology that retains an intrinsic material precision. The warp and weft have to be strategically arranged to achieve an even distribution of tension, a discipline that forbids mistakes but in return provides a clarity which ultimately liberates the process of creation.
