About the Presentation
Bueno & Co will present work by Joan Mitchell in a solo presentation at Independent 20th Century. The presentation centers on a group of rarely seen sketchbook works by Joan Mitchell from circa 1967, a pivotal moment following her move to France and deepening engagement with landscape as both perception and memory. Shown only once publicly and never before in the United States, these works offer a concentrated view into Mitchell’s process at a moment of transition and consolidation. Their reappearance now allows for a more precise understanding of how her works on paper operate not as studies, but as parallel, fully realized expressions. Within the context of renewed institutional attention to her work, the presentation foregrounds an intimate scale through which her larger concerns- gesture, sensation, and time- are distilled.

The presentation is particularly fitting as Mitchell's important 1992 works on paper exhibition Joan Mitchell: Pastel was held in this same venue as the former Whitney Museum of American Art. It will provide a fresh and dynamic context for the public to experience Mitchell’s works nearly 35 years later at The Independent 20th Century.
