About the Presentation
Alexandre Gallery will exhibit early paintings and works on paper by American Modernist Stuart Davis in cooperation with Vail Caldwell Projects. Stuart Davis: Night Moves provides a window into the remarkable confluence of ideas that led to the development of Davis’s singular artistic vision. Having dropped out of high school in 1909, he studied with Robert Henri in New York City and engaged with the Ashcan School. The group was committed to depicting modern life with radical realism, resisting the romanticization of urban poverty in academic painting and magazine illustration. In 1913, Davis became an illustrator for the socialist magazine The Masses, gaining recognition for showing a side of New York that polite society wished to ignore. That year also brought what he later called “the greatest single influence” on his work, the shock of seeing European avant-garde art at the Armory Show.
