About the Gallery
Cheim & Read was founded in 1997 by John Cheim and Howard Read. The gallery actively represents an international group of leading contemporary artists and estates, embracing diverse artistic practices, from painting and sculpture to photography and video. Emphasizing a rigorous curatorial model, the gallery is known for critical monographic exhibitions, including comprehensive, museum-quality surveys of work by artists such as William Eggleston, Lynda Benglis, Louise Bourgeois, Joan Mitchell, Milton Resnick, and Al Held. The gallery has also organized historically significant group exhibitions, including The New Landscape/The New Still Life (2006), an in-depth examination of Chaïm Soutine’s influence on modern art; The Female Gaze: Women Look at Women (2009), a show of women artists’ depictions of the female form; and I Am As You Will Be (2007), a study of the skeleton and mortality and artistic representation. The gallery’s exhibition program is complemented by its commitment to producing exquisite publications and exhibition catalogues, in which poets, critics, and historians are invited to provide insight into the working process of its artists. Based in Chelsea, Cheim & Read’s 6,000-square-foot building includes multiple spaces, allowing for intimate or expansive exhibition formats. Represented artists have exhibited extensively in museums and galleries worldwide and are regularly included in major exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale, the Whitney Biennial, the Carnegie International, and Documenta.
